LUXURY ELITE – ENDLESS

Vaporwave. The definitive escapist music genre for this decade, or this century even, jostling with nothing, in competition with nothing, its own entity, deep and weird and superficial; the new easy-listening, soundtrack to romantic dinners, vacant penthouse nights alone, settling in to a blissful spa, disappearing in thickets of people in some megacity, alighting on a space station resort orbiting Mars, and as many other fabricated scenarios as your imagination will permit.

Long after the hype dies down and the online publications of the world and their followers move onto the next hit of newness, vaporwave continues to thrive thanks to a dedicated online community and labels like— well, less of a plural and more of a singular label: Dream Catalogue. Started in early 2014 this is literally a catalogue of vaporwave, comprising dozens and dozens of releases from a load of different artists; check it out on Bandcamp.

But whatever. Really I'm just here to talk about a new track from one of the scene's better-known components, Luxury Elite. The track is called 'Endless' and it is the musicmaker's own addition to a recently released compilation, Allegiance Vol III.

For starters, this is undeniably catchy – the melody is reminiscent of vocal tracks arranged for shop-floor-destined instrumentals. It also is filled with all the airy mysticism and exotic anonymity effusing from pan pipe music that pervades plazas and high-streets across the western world (from what I can gather) – but in electronic form, of course. The damaged, found-sound-esque shuffle of the track has a delicious texture, built out of insectoid summer-nights percussion and cyclical syncopated chords, all of it washing over the simple and robust beat, thumping and swaying, the slow-moving motor that moves the track along.

Also, just in time, the music reaches a volta where the chords summon a different kind of atmosphere, more of a mysterious feel – imagine that the first part soundtracks a soaring perspective over some ancient ruins, whereas the change features soft-focus shots of slow-motion descents into the crumbling buildings and vaultish corridors of the ruins themselves (just about realising that these are edificial remains of mid-21st century Earth) – this happens just before the fade-out, making it seem as if there could be another change awaiting for us in the silence beyond the confines of this magical track.

HARRISON – WHY YOU MAKE ME HAPPY [FREE DOWNLOAD]

Last time I wrote about Canadian trackmaker Harrison it was regarding his track 'Lolipop Love', which heavily sampled something else. In fact, a lot of his stuff is heavy-heavy on the sampling side of things – being a component of vaporwave in the form of funk-loving New Generation, I wouldn't expect anything else to be honest with you. But: all artists change, all artists evolve – they wouldn't exactly be artists if they didn't now would they? Gotta have like some certain degree of progression and amelioration surely, or if not that, a creative wandering mind which hates boredom.

Now, however, with 'Why You Make Me Happy', Mr Harrison might be trying something different. He released or perhaps it's more realistic to say uploaded the track a few hours ago, posting it on Facebook with the message that he was "Trying to grow up and use less samples." I don't know if using less samples is a sign of growing up, but changing anything about your musicmaking style is at least a telling sign of maturation. Tagged "Future Love" the track is sure of itself in its upbeat, spacey romance, sprinkled with cut-up vocal samples as it continues into its synth-led heart.

Cause it is pretty synth-led, glowing in the fizzing jaunt of the beat, shining like rays of light streaming through a window and cutting through the summer dust of a room; samples of outdoors background noise separate sections of the song, giving it a fresh, Springtime feel. By the end, all elements have been added: laser pulse high-register synth melody stuttering, clonking woody xylophone, whooshing future air of synth chords. All of it comes together, fluttering vivaciously, a clean, surgically-cut track that still possesses the sensual nostalgia of the type of songs that Harrison would sample – a sense of soul, romance, funk lilt. Shocks of sound cluster zip in the meld of everything, the pop equivalent to orchestra hits, the flummoxing caress of the heart thanks to this wholly new and futuristic yet retrodirected sound, a whistle awakening memory, life returning to the earth.

Uh anyway, this is from Toronto-based producer Harrison and it marks a significant change in his sound. Being only 18-years-old, there's plenty of room for growth despite being so clearly gifted and skilled at musicmaking as he already is, and as such I await with anticipation to see how his music will sound in the future.

This is a FREE DOWNLOAD btw (click yoself here).

SAINT PEPSI UNHAPPY [VIDEO]

Wow it's here. And I never thought it would get here. Or, at least, I never thought there would be such a thing as an "Official Music Video" for one of Saint Pepsi's songs, but it's happened. It's rather incredible, really, that this song 'Unhappy' has gone as crazy as it has. It's not because I thought it was a bad song and was like, "how could THIS do well?" it's just a very different kind of song which I am very glad has done well.

I already wrote about the actual song itself when it 'came out', well, before it came out officially but it was floating around somewhere anyway so I thought whatever. The reason it was waiting in the shadows for because it was due to be premiered on The Fader - what a way for an underground internet (undernet?) artist to be heard by a much wider audience. But basically: a sped up sample of an acoustic lament about the end of summer from a late 90s emo band set to candy-shimmering synths and attitudinal trap beats. Who would've thought it would work? On paper, it's totally huh wtf. But in practice, it's actually omg wow.

The video is below. It is directed by Alexander Girav and there are also a lot of other people involved, the names of whom you can check out if you go to the actual page of the video on YouTube. For now, sit back, enjoy the bittersweet, nouveau-nostalgia of this track with the added visual bonus of a rather charming, blossoming new relationship that forgets everyone else to have fun together.

SPAZZKID DESIRE (願う) REMIXES

It's been a while since I was first going to write about this but so many things get in the way of so many other things, don't they? You know what it's like. But finally here it is.

Spazzkid, whose music I have been enjoying very much recently, released an album not so long ago - in April actually - called Desire (願う). Besides housing the incredible 'Getting To Know You' and the euphoric 'Loving Free', the album is brimming with a loving touch and a sense of wonder: synths pop and wind like setting suns, bass rolls and bounces like cylinders of smooth marble, percussion is toyed with and pulled into place to construct infectious beats, real instruments on loop support faraway vocals. It is a chilled and tasty slice of the talents of Spazzkid, aka Mark Redito, who has created a vibrant playground of luscious noises that resonate wonderfully.

Then at the end of last month he released a 20-track album of remixes by a number of different producers, who seem to treat the originals so well that they might as well be remixing their own songs. Indeed, "affection" is a word used in the description of the album, simply called Desire (願う) Remixes, and that word is wholly applicable in this case. It could perhaps be because a few of the remixers are fellow members of the artist collective New Generation (e.g. DINOSAURUS REX, Meishi Smile, Saint Pepsi) and therefore take care to do their very best in their remixes - but then again that might not have any bearing on it whatsoever.

It is, in any case, a diverse record that provides such a number of different perspectives on Spazzkid's original, all of which suit Spazzkid's sound whilst adding a delicious slant to it.

It's difficult to focus on any one part of the album and to avoid being overly waffly, I'll just give examples of how nicely variegated the sounds of this album are. You have stuff like the Hotwax remix of 'If Not You Then Who', which is a mellow cloud of synth hung with heavy bass cut with a darker vibe that pervades the song, but then again you have SVNDAZE's remix of the same song which puts the spotlight on Spazzkid's vocals over the wholly calm sound of a koto, before leaping into a whirlwind of chillment.

Another favourite of mine at the moment, Wasted Nights, gives a characteristically 80s spin to the ultimately catchy 'Loving Free', loading it with modulated synths and epic drum machine snares - yet TELEPHOBIA gives 'Loving Free' a bleepy house remix, turning it into a dancefloor-friendly number, chopping and looping Spazzkid's original sounds. Meishi Smile's 'First Digital Love RMX' is a euphoric house treatment of the same song, whilst Saint Pepsi veils it in his lush retro vibes.

DINOSAURUS REX retains the same twisted chill of 'Kokeshi Doll' but Diego Mapa turns it into a clatter of percussive beats and ray-gun synth. There are so many more things to say but I'd just end up going on and on and on... in short, however, this is a wonderful listen from start to finish. It is by turns chilled and energetic, slow and fast, filled with a dynamic that you cannot help but get sucked into - it's a genuine joyride, or a free-fall through sound-representations of pleasure; Spazzkid has a lot of talented friends, that much is evident!

VISAプリペイド [VISA PREPAID] OGASAWARA

Ugh. I just wrote a whole bunch of stuff and then somehow pasted over it with other stuff that had nothing to do with what I'd already written and there was no way to get it back - not even ctrl+z would help. Anyway, what I wrote was basically that we were going on another journey into the strange but wonderful world of New Generation. If you don't know, I'm obsessing about this a bit lately - an artist collective headed up by SAINT PEPSI, all with a kinda style that mixes retro beats and sounds with modern production techniques and other bits and bobs.

This time we are taking a no-border-no-culture trip to Japan - not that it particularly matters where an artist comes from. New Generation seem to have figured that much out, but I don't think it's a direct result of how the internet is - it is not yet a complete whole living and breathing mecha-organism, definitely not. Instead, New Generation seem to take their cues more from their thoughts and ideals for how music should be shared, using what tools are available rather than pushing absolutely brand new methods. Either way, whatever, nice idea I think.

So anyway we're in Japan (I think but god knows I could be wrong) for 'OGASAWARA' by the truly bizarrely named VISAプリペイド (that's VISA PREPAID). I, well, listen to it yo.

Beginning with the sound of what may well be rain, the rest of 'OGASAWARA' comes on in just as fluid and smooth a style. There is heavy, rumbling bass, like funk thunder cracking over hilltops. Instead of a snare to sit beside the thudding kick, there is a steady and very watery drip, as of a drip in a remote cave or something. Some stringed instrument sound, like an low-tuned koto, floats above everything like a slow-moving cloud, giving the chill-funk a touch of unearthly, spiritual romance.

It's not a conventional song, that's for sure - especially as the disembodied vocals begin to pour in gently towards the end of the song. However, although it isn't conventional, it sure does cleanse the brain - a kind of deep chill I guess. Btw Ogasawara is a village on one of the Bonin Islands (south of Tokyo) in Japan. VISAプリペイド has an album coming out at the start of July called スムーズOCEANS (SMOOTH OCEANS) and it will probably be very chilled, slow, funky, retro, lo-fi and strange, just as this one was. Like it or not, it's different.

SPAZZKID LIVE ON #SPF420

Yeah, if you're reading this thinking, "wtf is #SPF420??" then you are in the same boat as I am. That is, a boat adrift and constantly in wonder at what marvels/marvel at what wonders can be found on the internet. There's a lot to find. Anyway, I should probably explain what exactly #SPF420 is.

It is an online venue, unique in that it exists exclusively online, and it is a veritable hotbed of New Generation artists - I explained a little about New Generation when I wrote about SAINT PEPSI - one of the brains behind it all - a few days ago, but to reiterate basically: it's an artist collective leaning towards a wholly net-based music industry (my assumption). Alongside SAINT PEPSI are many other artists including Spazzkid, whom I wrote about the other day.

Enough of the Pokémon-style digression into the proclivities of this artist collective. More about the music. The reason I'm writing this is that Spazzkid has gone and done a 25-minute set on #SPF420, which aired yesterday. Astoundingly, this only has (at time of writing) 7 views, which is mental considering the sound of the music itself - not so mental if you consider the pitfalls of being a relatively unknown artist. Anyway, without further ado, please enjoy the smooth, wholly chilled vibes of this man's innovative beat-strong glitch-hop electro-pop.

The tracklist is this:
1. Forgiveness
2. Kokeshi Doll
3. Getting To Know You
4. Better Off Alone (Alice DeeJay cover) UNRELEASED
5. Loving Free

Yep, from the clicky otherworldly ambience of 'Forgiveness', to the sombre sunset romance vibes of 'Kokeshi Doll' - both with their fair share of bassy rumblings - we arrive at the wonderfully cute 'Getting To Know You' with its bouncy vocal samples. Then a surprise cover of Dutch Eurodance group Alice DeeJay's massive 1999 hit 'Better Off Alone', done to Spazzkid's trademark swaggering beat and complete with mind-ooze synths and steel drums. The set ends with the ravey 'Loving Free', a sharp cross between lo-fi bedroom pop and the soundtrack to people playing volleyball on a yacht harboured in the Maldives.

The visuals are great, too, and found according to Mark Redito (real name of Spazzkid) "from deep internets". Certainly looks that way. In any case, they're cool and fit the style of his music totally. He also looks like he is having a very nice time playing the music that I can only assume he loves making.

All songs come from his new album Desire, which is totally out now.
