🐣 CARLOSH GARZAT — SUBMERGE (HYPERBARIC OXYGEN MIX) [初演 • PREMIERE]

Washes of warm soothing synth roll gently over your mind, a sense of space gracefully opening up with the tide-like flowing and ebbing of those gentle chords, a cradle of calm that lulls you into a spell of somnolence. Created by Mexican artist Carlosh Garzat, this soul-melting track is a remix of an original much more conventional track that he released earlier this year: "The lyrics talk about submission in love, about emotions being fluid and sometimes changing too fast," he tells us, "as well as the fear of drowning in those emotions but wanting to experiment them nevertheless." However in this new version of 'Submerge', there is a feeling of vastness, a sense of acceptance in the waves of sound that aim to chill and placate, and it all came from a chance encounter with a Hyperbaric Oxygen Chamber.

"I was advised to have a couple of sessions," Carlosh explains. "It's used mainly for scuba divers and for relaxation purposes and anxiety in which pure oxygen is provided inside a chamber under reduced atmospheric pressure." Equal parts therapeutic and somewhat disturbing, the sessions inspired this new enlightened and awakened form of 'Submerge', where the vocals appear and float before your eyes, refraining like a mantra in the cloud of sound, the lightly clinical minimalism augmented by sparse pristine percussion snapping occasionally. In this new vessel, an almost uterine experience, the song is relaxing yet troubled by these words, almost like an interior monologue, yet in the serene vastness of it the power and immediacy of anxiety and doubt and negative emotions are lessened, reduced to what Carlosh calls "an impending fear."

  • 🔔 The 'Hyperbaric Oxygen Mix' is out as a single today (11th August) alongside the original mix of 'Submerge'.
  • 🔔 The original 'Submerge' is taken from Carlosh Garzat's Agoraphobic EP, released earlier this year. Feel free to purchase it via iTunes if you want.

🐣 BARAKA — LEISURE

The beat here, the decayed whispering tap of the boom-bap beat, shoots a beam of instachill as soon as it starts its swaying swing beneath the bendy bass and liquid stream and sultry vocals that fall in like a fog as the beat becomes more legible and the kicks bump the ambience with their cassette tape thuds. This horizontally inclined track is from producer and jazz pianist Baraka (real name Geoffrey Dean) and it is very fittingly named 'Leisure'—and that is exactly it, jazz flavours combining with beats to create a sense of blissful nothingness.

Effusing from the track – from its golden haze of sound, the soothing textures of those crooning vocals, the ambient plasma of synthetic noises, the deep chimes, the snippets of flute that wind in – is a big sense of leisure, of having nothing pressing to do, of melting into a sunset, dissolving into nature, occupying oneself with no occupation. The way the sounds weave between each other, a loose tapestry of languorous dimensions, this one fading into that one, this one falling away, now all of it gradually breaking only to return in fuller form, this pattern is random in the gentle way that clouds pass by overhead; so here we are, outstretched in warm glinting grass, observing the ebb and flow of clouds pluming majestically in its grand wisps melting and growing and merging and going.

🐣 LIAM.M — TON

The rich sheen of sounds at work in 'Ton' by Brisbane-based musicmaker Liam.M is a soothing reflection of chilled fluffycloud skies, calm coastal drives as the sun retreats beyond the sea, beyond the beach. Almost melancholy in its end-of-day majesty, the track seems to soar with emotive spectres of shimmering sound amidst thickets of synth, vocals rear up and call plaintively into an indigo sunset, a café del mar-esque special, drops of white sun glitter-glitter on sliding waves as people take their reclining position in readiness for the onset of dusk—the bummed-out-ness of light leaving vs. the beauty of that occurrence. Day/Night. Life/Death.

The beat propels us forward, a driving simply thudding beat with snare fills that smash their way through the slow motion momentum of the track. It's augmented and ornamented by luscious delicious percussion clanks and clatters throughout, clop-clicking like parts of a machine, which at 01:45 join the glimmer phasing brightness of the track and its softly booming bass, the beat falling away, the sound alone washing its atoning atmosphere over your ears. The rifling synth sounds, that hi-pitched golden element, is key in its wonderfulness, sounding like an enhanced sort of stringed Mediterranean instrument, helping to set the scene for this rustic organic slice of sound, this super-chilled yet well grounded illustration of beauty and its passing, and the mono no aware sense of pathos, the welling-eyes happy-sadness in that very thought.

不明 FUMEI – GINSENG COFFEE

The sun is hanging low in the sky, hitting the magnolia tree outside the window, throwing dappled shadows on the table where I'm sitting writing this. I love magnolia – it's like blossom (or it just is blossom), but big blossom, blossom that means business, Serious Blossom swaying in a sleepy breeze… and it's in this blissful spring-but-feels-like-summer evening that I stumbled across this track by 不明 FUMEI (不明, pronounced 'fumei' means "unknown"). I think Fumei might be from Italy but I could be wrong, might be German or something else. Who knows. Anyway, unfortunately the track in question, 'Ginseng Coffee', is only 1'30" but it's currently on repeat, sending its nice vibes into my brain.

Something about boom-bappish hip hop sounds like this fit this time of day so effortlessly – and if we're talking specifics then I suppose you'd have to say it was the listless offbeat clacking for the duration of the song, the soft but robust bass locked into the kick drum for undeniable rhythmic harmony, the lounge-leaning chords oozing with somnolent tremolo, phasing icy synth, hollow vox-esque sounds plaintively echoing a half-done melody in the midst of sunny heat haze; it's all this that makes this track so lovely, all of it culminating in a sound lightly decayed by its own innate sense of bliss.

'Ginseng Coffee' (which is just titled 'Ginseng' on the release – see below) embodies chillment of a very high degree crossed with otherworldly wooziness, summoning the groggy feeling of having fallen asleep in your garden and waking up with hot skin and absolutely no concept of time, birds zipping home to roost with chirps and whatnot, blue sky littered with near-dissipated clouds.

  • It's from a split release between 不明 FUMEI and o k h o called La Caffeteria, a 22-minute long selection of beats in the same vein as this, born from an apparent concept of sitting in a café, track titles including 'Espresso', 'Smokers Zone', 'Take A Sip' and 'Beans Smell'. Perfect leaning-back-with-a-coffee music. Buy it here. And here it is below :)

AIR JAPAN – TOKYO AUDIO

Get your brain massages right here! Come on folks, step on up step on up – you sir, with the brain, ain't yer brain tired of doing stuff? Ain't it harrrrd deciphering this world we live in sometimes? Well this is like a new lil miracle massage for grey matter called 'TOKYO AUDIO' and it's by AIR Japan. It's actually music it's not a real massage.

But it feels like one. All the sounds in this track are so gently fluid that it's real difficult not to drift away with em for the two minutes in which they exist, but at the same time they're all so futuristic, they're carefully considered noises that do not conjure a particular time and place that you have ever imagined. Instead you are seated in a plush chamber of chill, a deep chair softening as you recline in it, almost gripping your limbs with its nanotechnological cushions, a large screen (for um, hypnotising you? or something) change colours with each gargantuan wave of synth chord, bright cerulean fades into electric mauve. Each one is like a breath, the track effusing organic and automatic aesthetics simultaneously.

With the slow arpeggio, the percussive clicks, the backwards-water-droplet sound, the soft plasma waves of far-off flute noises twisting into figures of eight and other variously arranged loops of ethereality, the endlessly phasing resonance of those lounge inflected chords: it all melds into a thing that's as much future-spa as it is console startup screen, as undeniably chilled as it is portalesque in its purpose, cyber-exotica for the now.
