🐣 MAX ANXD — WAITING

The textures here are gorgeous, soft snow flurries and twinkling icicles, the crackling fruit juice appeal of Fox’s Glacier Mints in hologram format, the pixelated glassy clink of Chaos Emeralds, the sparkling metallic impact of the gleaming Big Key falling from the sky when you defeat Bowser in Super Mario 64; the sound of treasured trinkets now airborne and floating in a speckled cloud of crystalline decay; memories held dear now swirling in the contemporary realities of life.

These are the synth sounds that take flight and conjure exotic nothingness in ‘Waiting’ by Cluj-Napoca-based Romanian musicmaker Max ANXD. Ascending melodies paint intrigue whilst its irregular patterns and seeming randomness summon up an elsewhere yet to be explored, unfolding in the mists before our eyes.

It moves in three parts: firstly the glistening synth of the beginning soon is joined by swathes of thick sound like hurricanes in slow motion or the slow unfolding of an alien landscape as your mind hovers above it; secondly there is a bold crunch of distortion which heralds this new minimalist urgency as the synth, equal parts soft and sharp, stutters in rapid-fire bursts; thirdly, we emerge into a cradle of sound where the hush of vox synth becomes the overriding voice, a finale of soothing synth chilliness, the atmosphere calming itself in choir, re-balancing after the anxious midsection. It is a sonic illustration of the impatience as much as the resolve of an active imagination, the expanse of externality as much as the depths of internality.

🐣 EINARINDRA — SWEET HONEY FLOWS

This track is a proper little journey, a progressive electronic symphony that twists through darkness with snaking smoke twisting curling caught in angular spotlights that make cones of the thick whitegrey clouds, pulsing and strobing in time with the offbeat percussion that booms clicks and ticks for the duration. Fittingly it's called 'Sweet Honey Flows', the words which Reykjavík-based artist einarIndra sings in the choruses of this dark minimalist electronic pop song, accented with undeniable kinetic energy – but slow, aching – from its offbeat trip-hop foundation.

Synth plays a big part, fizzing and softly soothing at times, a great backdrop for the crooning vocals, both of which float into the voidsomeness going on here, the emptiness that sloshes all around and that ebbs and flows on all sides of the islets and crags of sound, a tide of dim spaciness that gives this track a moody somewhat sultry atmosphere—reminiscent of James Blake, for instance. The simple intricacy of the beat is something to get latched onto as well, with interesting rhythms between the alternating sharp sheen of the hi-hats and the full-bodied smash of snares and the thudding kicks playing in rubato triplets. It rises up later, progressing as it does into a tract of fairly intense synth buzzing and striking soulful strings, but it is restrained, maintaining its neo-noir cool, its nowhere romantic despairing flavour.

🐣 SILENT STRIKE — MELANCHOLIA FEAT. EM

The space in this track give those simple electronics that ping and twinkle a luscious cushion, the best cushion: room to breathe. The muffled but sharp lo-fi fuzz of these synth blips resonates into a thick void, making this track by Romanian musicmaker and film score composer Silent Strike one that is nocturnal and sultry, aided of course by the aching vocals of featured singer EM which shimmer with a mist of vocodered plasma. Slowly the song unfolds, sadness haunting its every graceful kinetic step.

Alongside the vacant space and reverb in 'Melancholia' there is warmth. Bass kicks boom tumbling along, a trickle of blooping boops spread softly, a fizz of synth warmly winds its way into the mix, a delicious fingerclick keeps time. And in the chorus it grows ever thicker, swaying with EM's now lilting layered voice and a slew of unexpected ornamentations, high-pitch chords that flash like mini shards of lightning, locking in with explosive snares, and hi-hats that tick and then rattle and then uzi drill panning left to right. The song is an exercise in creating pop music with real experimental elements, the almost outlandish use of noises, rhythm, space, makes this an evocative piece deserving of its title.

🐣 DJUSTIN — NEW PRESET

All along the quivering carapace is beset with jabbering angular synth like the ebbflow throttle of an alien machine, driving and forceful. The thud of the beat keeps time with electro sensibilities, the French touch thump-thwack clacking in the backdrop as the track tacks along its overcast path. It's a hearty potion of cold electronics, brightened by the ghostly vocals which seem apart and drifting above the slow gallop mechanics.

And into 'New Preset', by Stockholm-based Djustin, like welcome shards of sun on hard cold land, into the track arrive javelins of synth ablaze with uplifting light, lancing above the dark lurch of the beat and bass below, illuminating these lonely electronics like flashing lamps, the thin-air lustre of love or something like it, friendliness even, a new sheen of life. Dynamics of light and dark are wonderfully illustrated here, with thin synth juxtaposing thick, changes in key and the vocals ascending like the sun above clouds.

  • 🔔 Djustin is Rose Suau and Johan Angergård.
  • 🔔 'New Preset' is taken from Voyagers which is the duo's new album out 7th May on Swedish label Labrador Records.

✿ RYCE ✿ – FLOWERS

One commenter on this track said "gotta watch out the young ones are murking everyone in the game right now." And to some extent that may well be true. Not necessarily that they're already better, or that they are actually actually murking everybody, but the sentiment still stands. Why is it that a younger person might be better? Well, firstly it's easier to learn things when you're younger. Your brain is more malleable, skills and things sink in more easily. Secondly, there's less bias! If you've only just started making music at 20-something, it might be the case that you're more biased towards one sound, or less inclined to experiment with other sounds.

If I had more time to explore the differences more thoroughly with actual evidence, etc. then obviously I would sound less like I am totally going on conjecture and "what I think" i.e. "my opinion". But I digress.

I speak of youth because the producer of this track is, apparently, 14-years-old. Really? If so, that's amazing, big talent. But it's not the reason I'm writing about the track. I'm writing about it because I heard it and liked it! :)

Created by Finnish producer ryce – or for brevity's sake let's say just plain ryce (no pun intended) – the track is called 'f l o w e r s' or 'flowers' and it's a slow melding of luscious sounds twisting together to a gloriously textured beat twinkling with metallic and glassy chimes of percussion. It's underpinned with supple columns of bass, a sample, with pitch-shifted vocals and slow guitar twangs, from I-don't-know-where winding its way gently across the track. It tastes like vaporwave with hints of hip hop, but it feels more unique than that. It feels like liquid treasure, a bypassing of ontological worries to simply float through life with bliss free-flowing all around you. If only〜

The real beauty of being this young and this creative and talented, however, is anticipating how these skills and this vision will evolve over time. Here's hoping for the literal best song ever from ryce one day in the future.
