🐣 TOMOS — SURFACE TENSION

⌾ LISTEN TO TOMOS, SURFACE TENSION ⌾

With gleams of jazz in the wide arms-resting-on-leather-sofa chords, 'Surface Tension' is an excercise in late-night fluidity, a warmly lit space inhabited by mid-century furniture and people murmuring in dark corners, touching each others' elbows and looking into each others' eyes. More than just in the sultry tropicalia groove that swims in the music, Tomos provides a clipped croon, setting the precedent with lines like "I guess there's more to us than being friends."

As the South-East London (via West Wales) musicmaker tells us, however, it was in a "YouTube binge" that 'Surface Tension' was born.

"As a lyric writing technique I often randomly write down lists of words influenced by what I've seen, heard and been interested in that day," he admits. "A couple of years ago, I had been researching the adhesive properties of water, but also found myself watching that trending video by Tatia Piliva, FIRST KISS (the one with load of ‘strangers’ kissing upon meeting for the first time)."

Loop crafted, lyric book in front of him, 'Surface Tension' was born - and then forgotten about, only to be found two years later and be magicked into some brand new music. Tomos carves this pearlescent soundscape not only of watery surface tension, complete with submerged-yet-surfacing synths splashy in their wah-wah-esque repetition, but also the surface tension of a convivial meeting between two people, their underlying desires concealed but bubbling like the agitated, heat-warped percussion shot through the track—and which it ends with, like a hearbeat.

🐣 MALENA ZAVALA — COULD YOU STAY

When this song first eased into its beachside doo-wop flavours, oh how much like an island paradise it seemed, how with the slow sweep of chords it paints this lightly clouded atmosphere of warm sky and swaying palms. Yes, there is this total tropicalia sound that is undeniably smooth and sleepy, sounding not exactly like but certainly recalling with its lovely Hawaiian-guitar-esque guitar refrain the nighttime soundtrack for the island on Animal Crossing: New Leaf—chill and languid, melting into the landscape itself, that lazy feeling that overcomes people when they are transplanted from temperate climates to subtropical coral islands. And that ticking bongo percussion, somehow the glow of tiki lights, flashes of paradise.

But in Argentinian London-based Malena Zavala’s gently undulating song ‘Could You Stay’ – an oscillating rhythm that feels like the slow collapse of beach-bound waves and their ambient wash across the sand – there is also this filmic doo-wop pattern to the bass, something that takes us from the expanse and carefree enclave of island life to a more intimate nocturnal setting; this is especially highlighted by the pining vocal refrain, “Could you stay for a while…? Even just for tonight…” And a closeness radiates from the warmth of the track, the embrace of its soft synth chords, the hopeful chorus of layered harmonising vocals. It’s a lovesong before it becomes a lovesong, the tingling outstretched hand question before the reciprocal answer, the searching sashay of desire.

PSAPP EVERYTHING BELONGS TO THE SUN

Yo cool kids and hip-happenin peeps, word on the street is Psapp is/are back after like so long! ... Truth is, I'd never heard of Psapp before until yesterday. Then I did hear of them and I heard their actual music, their new song in particular, and I liked it and that's how I am here writing this now. Since I don't know Psapp, let's talk about that for a second.

They are a duo, Galia Durant and Carim Clasmann, from London who met 12 years ago and have been creating music ever since. According to their Wikipedia page they are credited with the creation of "toytronica" - electronica augmented by the use of toy instruments (whistles, flutes, mini guitars, a chicken). They've released four albums and five EPs. That's a lotta releasing. Despite these past endeavours I think it's important to focus on what's going on now: their new song 'Everything Belongs To The Sun'. It's nice and I hope you like it too.

In a way, everything kinda does belong to the sun, doesn't it? Well rather than belonging... we kinda just really need the sun. If you can equate this neediness to a sense of belonging to someone, then I guess yeah. Everything belongs to the sun. In any case, it's a bustling and busy song that sweats with equatorial rhythms, fizzing flavours of various modes of trickling percussion - even hand claps; my favourite! - float into your mind like a surreal vision crossing in front of you.

The vocals are good too - in the spirit of repetition, the lyrics "Everything belongs to the sun..." loop like a mantra, layered in distinctive harmonies for a gloriously enigmatic effect in Galia's clean and confident tones. A background "oooo-oo" joins the beat for additional tropicalia. At 2:55 a ukelele or something lends its whimsy to the collection of noises, and a baby gurgling also joins the party for cementing the fact that everything, yes even babies, belong to the sun. Where the hey do you think babies darn come from? It's the sun! Um.

Anyway, I really like this. It's a lovely tribally sound from some people who clearly like making music, and not just making music like playing an instrument but TRULY making music, like... chucking sounds together. For instance, a baby? Come on. That's a quaint curio if there ever was one. Nice experimentation. Looking forward to the album which is "coming soon".
