🐣 ХЬЁРДИС — РАЗРУШЕНИЕ

The satisfying snowbreeze from the underworld, this calming wave of white noise that is so abrasive and scratching at your ear canal and like the ghost of a chainsaw somersaulting through the sky, a downpour from tungsten grey clouds soaked in distortion. That is the crux of this track by Russo-Ukrainian duo Dmitry Gruber and Marianna Diakova aka Хьёрдис (Hjördis), the shoegaze wall of crushed wavelengths that rifles through the track at all times. Called 'Разрушение' (meaning destruction or demolition) it's a song whose lyrics, sung in contrasting plaintiveness by Diakova, read simply in translation: "I want to destroy / Everything I see / Everything I feel / Is nothing."

Speaking to yes/no via email, Gruber told us that the track is "mostly about feeling, when you're calm, dreamy but very destructive at the same time." And at the heart of this song is that explosive gale of a guitar sound that feels as though it could strip cement from the metal bones of a building, and propelling it there is this driving energetic beat with popping kicks and snares, yet there is this golden guitar chord all liquid and chorused and with this brilliant rippling sheen to it, and there are these sunny vocals, innocent and fresh like clear sky after rain. It is exactly that balance: dreamy but destructive. "Some kind of ambivalence," Gruber clarifies. And you feel it, this infectious nothingness, how it would be to crush a derelict building with one thumb vs. imagine flying without a care. Similar feelings.

🐣 DRESAGE — CENTER

At first listen this seems like a regular indie pop sort of song, you know, but there are touches to it that are unexpected, gorgeously so, and that's when you realise that actually there's a lot going on here—it's a cocktail of sound, a blend of different flavours that help to create this delicious unpredictable morsel of music. Called 'Center' it is this word that indeed places itself at the centre of this song, the word skipping in the choruses as sung by its creator, the LA-based Dresage. It's her vocal that adds one seemingly ill-fitting element to the bounce of the track, with her bright tone and swing rhythms and flitting melody, it is the epitome of breezy soul, best accompanied you may think by slapdash sixths and sevenths on a nylon string guitar.

But that is not the case here. The carefree spirit of her vocal pirouettes and leaps through the French touch infusion of the slow simple beat – the same robust kicks, the same semi-abrasive snares – through the rounded gloops of bass synth that nod in syncopation, simplistic and VGM-conjuring. It has this happy-go-lucky dewy green grass feel. Yet more elements subvert this: cuts of her own vocal breathy and whooshing rise up and down like a boat jostled by choppy waves, an inkling of glitch; and the most brilliant touch, a cluster of high-pitched tumbling piano, instant frosty chill in its twinkling notes, its far-reaching reverb garnishing the track with airs of melancholy; bright synth chord stabs that shock you awake with their plasma beam stridulation. 'Center' doesn't actually inhabit a central point, but instead is the things that orbit it, the influences and audiophilia on and of the musicmaker herself evident in the different moods it can conjure.

  • 🔔 Little bit of trivia for you: Dresage is also human person Keeley Bumford who has, amongst other things, contributed to the Bayonetta 2 soundtrack with the official theme for the game 'Tomorrow Is Mine', so there you go.

🐣 PRINCIPLEASURE — HYSTERICAL O

This kinetic vessel takes us on a voyage through fizzing retro electric seas, sloshing and foaming grey-blue, cutting through it all smoothly and simply, a vision of the future from the past, looking forward from the analogue age, the modulating synths airbrushing complexity with their warm wide tone, their breezy ascending pattern. Outstandingly simple, Principleasure's thumping 'Hysterical O' crackles with residual feedback from a bygone era, yet quivers with minimalism and negative space, simultaneously rich and lo-fi yet sparse and considered—"I wanted to create something that sat between club and soundtrack," the producer told us.

The kick drum bumps below, working with the addition and subtraction of driving razor-sharp gleaming hi-hats to effect dynamism into the track, the white noise resonation of these drum machine percussives adding rounded muffled texture to the plosive sounds, nuancing the basic beat with that groovesome squelch of a synth bass stepping constructivist throughout. Created using only vintage synthesisers, 'Hysterical O' doesn't ape a retro style but is rather a reincarnation of it, an anachronism: the creation of a modern minimal house track with tools and materials we no longer use.

  • 🔔 'Hysterical O' is taken from Principleasure's debut four-track EP, Hexagonal Dab, which you can listen to over on SoundCloud or acquire it via Bandcamp if you like.
