The cutting abrasion of this garage beat has that divine angularity that impels you to some semblance of rhythmic movement, a tight swing between the subtle shuffling thud of the kick and that cracking snare, with the hi-hat pattern effusing a boneless energy, the fairy zing of triangle ornamenting in the midst of those furioso metallics – yes, and here we have ourselves a staunch conveyance of UKG from the minds of Manchester musicmaker Murlo and Bristol-via-London producer Conducta. But it’s not just the sharp and shiffling scrappy beat that makes ‘Together’ a wonderful vessel of vibrant music.

No, it’s also the wonky synth chords that crown this song in tracts of gemlike glossiness and refraction, combined at some points with occasional crystalline clonks; and it’s also the soft scampering synth leads – like an urgent team of spirits working to lift this track off the ground and into some indescribable ether. These sounds shroud the track in otherworldliness, but it remains gloriously grounded with clean bulges of bass that give it a wide, bouncy flavour. And here we have the rhythm, and the atmosphere, but the soul of the song is in its pitch-shifted vocal, the nightcorey low-quality lifting of vocals from somewhere, their reverb, their high frequency, give it this quality of decayed siren-song that, alongside the punchy beat, the mystique of the synth, animate ‘Together’ with splendid heartache and melancholy.

🐣 CRAPFACE — ALONE

https://soundcloud.com/markredito/better-off-alone-alice-deejay To hear this modern classic in such a new vessel is like the spirit of a pharaoh oozing inside a brand new Maserati, escaping the dust of death, transferral from one set of wrappings to another. Whilst Alice Deejay's original 'Better Off Alone' was in itself a major earworm of the late '90s, it was a Eurodance sensation of the time and was tempered with the trappings and tropes of the genre. It has been given a new lease of life in 'Alone' by Crapface, an homage to a track for which a certain segment of the online music community is eternally grateful; we're talking things like nightcore, PC Music and its peripheries.

The plaintive, haunting vocal melody of the original is played in on intricate medley of tuned percussion and synths in Crapface's version, replete with sound effects and irregular beats, wildly juxtaposing against the pogosticking dance of the original with a focus on space and texture, the clinking-clomping chimes sounding stark, monumental, lonely against a voidsome backdrop. These are then twisted and warped on a bed of booming bass before the "talk to me…" section rolls in, which is more of a direct successor to the original than the rest of the track. It is an exercise in celebrating a classic without being a straight cover, or a remix. Instead it has been painstakingly transposed, the essence of the original encased in crystal in a continuation of cultural preservation.

LILY – BEACH GIRL

We're discovering Lily as Lily, rather than Lily as she was formerly/is still known (Ultrademon). It seems a good a time as any; recently she released her debut under this new moniker (her real name), Psychic Jealousy, and it's the first explosive opener from that album that's the focus here: 'Beach Girl'—an exciting swirl of ineffable fun. "Beach girl"... What does it connote? A girl at the beach. But Lily says much more than just this, painting a deeper picture of summer, holidaying, freedom, memories, broad and minute sonic brushstrokes forming an unending, relatable image. Partly, it's the polished late-90s-early-00s-party-music vibe that give it a quality of being somewhat unlocatable in time, lending a fantasy feel to it: or maybe that's just the internet talking.

Slap of snare shakes the track into life, different patterns of syncopated digital synth chords and plink-plonking boops make themselves known, some of these at one point or another becoming part of its frenzied refrain, uptempo beat pulsing pulsing with life beneath it all. These sumptuous and deeply toned sounds, clean and rounded, forming the main crux of the track, are decorated with thin synth arpeggiating down in misty rain, orchestra hits rapid-firing, all of it whirling together, melodies crossing over and changing dynamically throughout, the beat – with its punchy snare and precision hi-hats – dictating changes and keeping foot-tapping, head-nodding, heart-beating time.
