With its haunting pitched croons lifted from Alicia Keys' 'No One' effusing from a backdrop of synths bleeding together and time-worn beats, 'You Can Stay Forever' by producer Daniel Bortzreads like a vestige of the past. It moves through forests of flustered elastic acid arpeggios, plumes of vox synth laying a fog over proceedings, while the stuttering echoes of thin, gleaming chords punctuate the song like strobe lights.

The faint syncopation of it all, the crushed indistinct hi-hats, the destructed snares and their harsh reverberation, the lo-fi aesthetic, its juddering dancefloor atmosphere (sticky floors; the floral tangle of beer and perfume) — all of it culminates in an unearthed relic of a track; a cassette plunged into a tape deck that conjures ghosts and memories of a grainy, unremembered time instead of sound.

THE DRIFTER DAY AND NIGHT

This fantastic track 'Day And Night' comes from Berlin-based artist, The Drifter. It comes ahead of his new EP Lovers, scheduled for release 16th November this year, and promises - with its lush, dancefloor-scented soundscape - to be quite the EP indeed. It's the 16th on Permanent Vacation's SoundCloud, but the 20th on The Drifter's... so, not sure what to believe. Who is wrong? Who is right?

Date confusion aside, Permanent Vacation have a pretty illustrious history, a long and varied list of trysts and rendez-vous all remembered as innumerable EPs and LPs from just as innumerable a list of talented artists, producers and DJs. The lean, if you don't know, is towards dance music, sophisticated dance that glitters on the border between light and dark, euphoria and dysphoria, day and night (excuse the pun). This track by The Drifter is no different, playing with the emotions of love and stretching them across a canvas of beats and subtle electronic sounds that flutter in and out like far-off crazy heartbeats.

There's a pulsing bit of bass synth that varies booms just alongside the kick, driving the track forward. From start to finish the percussion in the beat becomes more and more complex, adding to various flavours and layers of this veritable dish of track. The dark overtones make this track what it is: a joy to listen to.

JOHN TALABOT LEAVE ME

I found this Barcelona-based producer thanks to a recent remix (or 'vocal refix' as he calls it) he did of the wonderful Teengirl Fantasy's underheard 2010 anthem 'Cheaters'. It's great - completely chilled with deepened vocals, giving the already-classic song a completely different vibe.

This song below, 'Leave Me (friendly pattern version)' is a solo effort by John Talabot and certainly not his first. It's a masterclass in giving a song time to build up by letting it breathe and lift organically, rather than forcing dynamic with sudden syncopated changes in volume or tempo.



Though repetitive (and what dance music isn't?) this chilled house is extremely easy on the ears, a sampled "Don't leave me..." gradually finding its way through the chords to become the main focus of the song around two thirds of the way through, when Talabot really goes to town, messing with the sample till the close of the track. Nearly perfect, you'll be melting in the sun to this track.

And if you like that, and if you like house music, you'll love his 'Summerized mix'. Released a year ago to his SoundCloud page, it's an hour-long festival of sun-dreched poolside cocktail-soaked chatter-driven party-forged obscure disco house tunes, mixed together with more than a small dose of knowledge in how to create and sustain an atmosphere. I'm listening to it in the garden right now - this mix chills to the max.

'Leave Me' is soon being physically introduced to the world via German label Permanent Vacation's latest compilation, beautifully named If This Is House I Want My Money Back Zwei. Due for release on 26th August, and if John Talabot's input is anything to go by, it's going to be a delightful experience.
